Are you looking for an easy, affordable, and fun way to discover the wonders of the coral reef around the Gili Islands? Book a snorkeling trip or an “around the 3 island” trip and discover the marine life around Gili Trawangan, Gili Meno and Gili Air while snorkeling along the reef in clear turquoise water.
The reefs around the Gili Islands are a marine protected area called Gili Matra Marine Natural recreation Park. There are around 20 different snorkel / dives sites around the Gili Islands.
Gili Trawangan offers great snorkeling along the north beach, where you have the chance to see huge Bumphead parrotfish (during full moon), colorful Angelfishes, Clown fish (Nemo), turtles and if you are lucky you see a black tip shark passing by.
Both on the south of the harbor and just outside of Gili Divers you can visit a artificial reef called Bio-rock.
Gili Meno’s best snorkeling spots are a sunken steal platform called “Bounty Wreck” which sank almost 10 years ago and is fully overgrown by coral, located on the south west side.
A spot called Turtle Heaven, has a hill raising up from the sea floor to around 8 m depth, located on the north east coast of Gili Meno.
Gili Air has a great shallow reef in the south east part of the harbor, in front of Tami’s Neverland. Along the north tip of the island and on the south west side.
If you dont want to go on a snorkeling trip you can also explore some of the great snorkeling spots by yourself. You can hire snorkel equipment from many places along the beach.
When snorkeling without a boat please be aware that the currents can be very strong around the Gili islands. Always use fins, always check in which direction the current is taking you and stay close to the islands! Never try to swim across to the next island.
The turtles can be seen very easily by either just snorkeling or diving.
The best places to look are:
Gili Trawangan
Diving – Halik reef / Shark point / Goodheart reef
Snorkelling – on the north coast of Trawangan start near Karma Kayak, and just
along the main beach, start in front of Villa Almarik and finish at Horizontal bar.
Gili Meno
Diving – Meno wall and Meno slope
Snorkelling – on the north east start at Goodheart bungalows and finish on
the old Bounty pier wreck.
Gili Air
Diving – Haan’s reef and Gili Air Wall
Snorkeling – any where along from the north east part in front of the Gili air Hotel all the way down back to the harbor past Gili Divers on Air.
Join a Glass Bottom Boat
These trips leaves every day from Gili Trawangan. You will see the underwater world around all the three Gili islands. Gili Trawangan, Meno and Air.
These trips are in generally quite cheep but expect a boat full of other snorkelers.
Mask, fins and snorkel is always include in the trip price.
